Street Parties, Gatherings &
Special Events for the Plumstead/Woolwich Areas

This photo is at the junction of
Bramblebury Road / Durham Rise taken at a street
party at the end of the 1st World War. The
ladies name at the forefront of the picture is
Florence Bingham and the lady next to her is
Lilian Crawford. I got this info from Flo ' s
daughter who is 82 years old now. But I consider
the info reliable.

This photo shows a street party
group on the corner (by the shop was the
junction) of Gunning St / Garibaldi St.
Plumstead.
The shop was called Alfred Edward Paine Bakery.
With the assistance of a member of staff we
found the info in one of the record books, so I
am satisfied they are correct.

This photo was taken at the junction
of Hartville Road / Garibaldi St, Plumstead.
The shop on the right at the rear of the photo
was called Alfred Savage Grocer. These facts are
also correct according to the record books.

This is a picture of my grandmother and granddad
(with the X's). Probably it was celebrating the
Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and is
in Ancona Road. Phote: Helen Jones

My grandparents lived in Ancona Rd;
Plumstead (Orchard Rd). Their house was an old
large Victorian house. It covered three floors
including a cellar. During the war the family
would use the cellar to shelter from the air
raids as you could climb under the house from
the celler and climb back up to the front room.
My house was on the left of the
picture where the tables were just out of shot.
The very end of the road came under Welling -
Kent. There was a line which went across the
road and the pavement to divide the two
districts. The Plumstead end had a gravel road
and the welling end had tarmac (very odd) wonder
if it is still like it? My mother and her sister
went to Conway
Rd School.
I'm looking for old photo's of
Plumstead High Street, circa 1900 era, as my
great grand parents had a shop along there, but
no one has any photo's of it or of this part of
the High St. It was a sweet shop and their
surname was Austin
Helen Jones
Can anyone help here?
If so, please contact Pete.

John Singleton is forth from left second row,
holding dish mop and baby, going as, 'don`t
forget fathers day' (because it was fathers
day.) My mother painted a black eye on me and
gave a big lip-stick kiss on my cheek.

photographer was S. Paine of 2a Brewery Road,
Plumstead. Photo kindly supplied by Derek
Crompton.

Derek says his Uncle Dennis BOWDEN
is the third in from left front row with the
school cap (Conway). Do not know any of the
others. His grandfather lived there before
moving to Piedmont Road.

VE Day Celebration, Donaldson Road,
Shooters Hill, Woolwich. Photo: Roy Earnshaw
Roy is on the first bench from the left fourth
from the front, that is the left hand side of
the bench nearest the edge of the photo. His
brother Eric is on his right hand side and next
to him Peter Gale and his brother Derek.
Opposite Derek on the same bench is Keven Walker
and 3 along from his right is Howard James. Roay
and Eric Earnshaw's parents are amongst the
adults and this photo is, I think, typical of
street photos depicting a war weary nation
especially the adults.
